This is what was reported from the site of The Brown Berets of Watsonville, California.
According to the group—which initiated the "No Se Puede" campaign against the United Farm Workers for having a Budweiser logo appear under the UFW's iconic "Sí se puede" image during the 50th anniversary convention of the organization co-founded by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta—California's Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan (MEChA) conference passed a unanimous resolution asking that the UFW return the $25,000 in sponsorship money from Anheuser-Busch and publicly apologize. The $25,000 is the number being quoted by the Brown Berets of Watsonville, and it has not been confirmed by either the UFW or Anheuser-Busch.
This is what the post reported:
The CA Statewide Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan (MEChA) conference passed a unanimous resolution this weekend calling on ALL LOCAL MEChA chapters and individual members to call and email the United Farm Workers to demand they return their $25,000 sponsorship money and submit a PUBLIC apology for such an offensive error in the UFW judgment.
MEChA is a historic student organization dedicated to the evolution of the Latino and Raza causa. The UFW has always been held in high esteem with many of these students but this weekend the students said NO MORE FOOLING US!!! They are demanding accountability from an organization that has built it’s reputation on the call and fight for social justice. The UFW cannot hide behind their mask of integrity anymore.
THANK YOU MEChA. We will follow up with a more detailed press release of the chapters present and the number of students this historic resolution represents.
In the meantime, we tried to reach out again to both the UFW and Anheuser-Busch yesterday, but none of our emails or calls were returned. Last Friday, Anheuser-Busch told us that they were preparing a statement to share with us and we had expected to get that statement yesterday.
