With less than a week to go until Election Day, the Mitt Romney campaign is broadcasting a new Spanish-language ad in Florida that goes straight to the Latino fear factor.
As reported by The Miami Herald, the following ad says it all. We are bit surprised that the Romney campaign forgot to add Daniel Ortega, Salvador Allende, Subcomandante Marcos, Pablo Escobar, Dolores Huerta, and La Raza. Step up your game, Romney campaign. If you are going to scare and insult US Latino voters in Florida, you need to add more "devils" to the mix. Yes, we are being sarcastic. (FYI: For the real story about the EPA Guevara gaffe, click here.)
Here is what the Herald had to say about it:
Since at least Tuesday, his campaign has begun heavily running this ad that links President Barack Obama with Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chávez, Fidel Castro's niece and communist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The campaign, despite repeated requests, didn't furnish the ad. So please pardon the cheap iPhone video recording of the spot that aired three times in one prime time Spanish-language news program Tuesday and at least four times on the same show Wednesday — including twice in the same commercial break.
Later in the article, the Herald shared the following email from an Obama supporter:
But at least one Cuban reader, Rosa Hombredela, was outraged and said in an email that the ad is evidence of "corrupt politics. True, people like my father and mother helped build what the city of Miami is today, but, it is unfortunate but also true, that the same infectious style of politics that put Castro in power has germinated in Miami making it a banana republic. I was born in Cuba, raised in the United States, I'm a woman, a Republican and I voted yesterday for President Barack Obama. Proud to say so."
That’s awful and with Romney’s approval. That looks like some hack job one of those PACs would put together. I do think this might resonate with a certain section of Florida’s Cuban population (the remaining 1st generation and some second generationers). The hatred and anger is still there…ask Ozzie Guillien and Elian Gonzalez wasn’t all that long ago. But, the shelf life on this type of stuff is running lower by the year. I think more than just be outdated, which I agree with @julito77 that it is, it’s missing the bigger change that is happening in Florida’s Latino population which is a large Puerto Rican population that is setting across the Central part of the state. I would venture to say if candidates would get out of their mind Florida = Cuban Exiles and start dealing with the changes in Florida’s Latino population, they would be better off. That might actually involve dealing with some “island issues” among other things. Commercials like this are and will grow increasingly to be a waste of money.
Pretty much spot on @DignityPeace
