In a week dominated by United Airlines outrage and more bombings in the Middle East, the story of 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, one of the victims of the Monday shooting at a San Bernardino elementary school, is not going unnoticed, at least to the more than 4,500 people who have already raised more than $125,000 in just 48 hours to help Jonathan’s family with funeral and living expenses.
A GoFundMe page set up by Jonathan’s cousin simply asks that people “help my cousins raise money for funeral expenses & meals to help provide for her family in this time of need.”
“My whole family would greatly appreciate any forthcoming donations, the love and support in this time of need,” the petition continues. “May god bless you all. #@ngeljonathan”
The $10,000 goal was quickly surpassed. As of this posting, 4,538 people have raised $125,340.
Jonathan’s story is heartbreaking. A Los Angeles Times story published Thursday talked about how Jonathan was battling a rare genetic disease called Williams Syndrome . CBS News also featured a story about how Jonathan parents asked school officials to inform others about their son’s condition.
