These are the oldest and most prestigious awards given to Latino baseball players. The awards began in 1990 when the BBWAA overlooked Boricua Ruben Sierra for the 1989 AL Rookie of the Year and gave it to Robin Yount. A bunch of South Bronx activist decided to honor Ruben.
