We had a busy few days but we couldn’t pass up on what our friend @miblogestublog tweeted on Wednesday:
Vicente Fernández refused a much needed liver transplant for fear of receiving the organ of a homosexual. #NotTheOnion https://t.co/D18zD0ApRb pic.twitter.com/6JPvA9DEqj

Excuse us, what?
And yes, it is true, as the following interview shows:
This is what Fernández said in Spanish about his liver cancer and why he didn’t want a transplant: “Me querían poner un hígado de otro cabrón y les dije: ‘yo no me voy a dormir con mi mujer con el hígado de otro guëy. Ni sé si era homosexual o drogadicto”.
Or in Spanglish: “They wanted to put another cabrón’s liver in me and I said: ‘I’m not going to sleep with my wife with the liver of another guëy. I don’t know if he’s a homosexual or a drug addict.”
Chente eventually got surgery in Chile through a robot, but still…
We don’t know what’s worse: Chente’s homophobia or homophobic responses about his homophobia?
At least this happened in response:
This was bound to happen… #HígadoGay pic.twitter.com/8Hxi0Q8hi9

Senor Fernnandez comes from a very different and traditional culture very different from the progressive one of today. I don’t at all agree with him, but I can’t judge because of the context
Before you chastise this man you should take into consideration that he only has a 4th grade education. He came from a mountain village with strong religious and cultural norms. Most Native Americans, indigenous people believe in animism, the attribution of a soul to plants, inanimate objects, and natural phenomena. To his understanding just as you would gain the strength and bravery of a bull or a bear you kill by eating part of its heart, you can also get “el mal ojo” or evil eye from others who has bad intentions. He is not being homophobic. He has nothing against gays, it’s the transmission of disease that he doesn’t understand. Just like there are millions of diabetics who don’t understand that the food they eat makes them sick.
Amen. I don’t blame him.
