A new report released on Tuesday by the Government Accountability Office concluded what so many of us already knew: that Latinos are grossly underrepresented in the media industry.
The study, called “Workforce Diversity: Analysis of Federal Data Shows Hispanics Are Underrepresented in the Media Industry,” noted that “Hispanics are underrepresented in the media industry compared to their representation in the rest of the workforce,” adding that “in 2019, Hispanics made up an estimated 12% of workers in the media industry (which includes film, television, publishing, and news) compared to an estimated 18% of workers in the rest of the workforce.”
“In the media industry,” a brief about the study added, “service worker positions (e.g., food service) had the highest percentage of Hispanic workers, while management positions had the lowest.”

On Tuesday, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) spoke at the National Press Club about the study. His full remarks are in the following video:
The GAO brief about the study explained why it conducted the research, explaining that “The media industry plays an important role in educating and entertaining the public, but some have questioned the industry’s commitment to workforce diversity, including for Hispanic workers.”
