Last night, New York’s WPIX TV broadcast a report about how four East Haven, CT police officers were arrested for racial profiling Latino residents. After WPIX’s Mario Diaz presented an overview of the arrests, he had a chance to ask East Haven Mayor Joe Maturo questions about how the diversity of the city’s police force and what the mayor plans to do to repair relations with the Latino community in East Haven.
“I might have tacos,” Maturo said.
Later Diaz reported that Maturo spoke to him again and said his quote was taken “out of context.” We will let you decide. Here is a clip from the report. Our take? Since East Haven’s Latino population is mostly Ecuadorian, Maturo’s comment just shows ignorance and disrespect on so many levels.
