On Friday morning, the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico met in New York City, where they named Jose Carrión III as chairman and officially took over financial decision-making from Puerto Rico’s government.
During the meeting, which lasted less than 20 minutes, the board requested a detailed fiscal plan from governor Alejandro García Padilla by October 14.
Numerous protesters were escorted out after interrupting the meeting by yelling out “this sounds like slavery” and “Puerto Rico has been a colony for over 500 years and it’s enough”.
Carrión III, one of four Republicans on the board, is also Commissioner Resident Pedro Pierluisi’s brother-in-law. He answered a few questions for the press after the meeting, but said he was not aware of when or where in Puerto Rico the next board meeting will be.
