Shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, an anti-immigrant amendment by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) was rejected by a 50-50 vote. Capitol Hill sources confirmed to Latino Rebels over the weekend that a bill to create a citizenship pathway for approximately eight million undocumented will be introduced this week in the House of Representatives.

Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) is expected to negotiate immigrant relief into a bipartisan immigration bill with Senate Republicans, but Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), the most senior Latino in the Senate, expressed doubts that reform will pass this year.

The bill increases ICE’s overall funding by $284.7 million, including a $57 million increase for the controversial Enforcement and Removal Operations division of the agency responsible for the detention and removal of immigrants.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough has advised the Senate against including a third immigrant relief proposal presented by Senate Democrats in the Build Back Better Act.

And this is one path to get the workers here in the United States able to come out of the shadows, take these jobs, pay taxes, and help us grow the economy.”

Senators returned to Capitol Hill on Monday to speculation over what comes next in immigration relief negotiations concerning the Build Back Better Act, which passed the House on November 19 but did not include a pathway to citizenship.

Immigration advocates got a rare, if uneven policy win Friday when the House of Representatives voted 220-213 to pass a hard-fought version of the Build Back Better Act that includes a mixed bag of relief provisions facing an uncertain future in the Senate.
