The GOP has made inroads with Latino voters in recent years in much of the U.S. and especially in Florida. That strong showing, however, is leading to some tension as the newly emboldened Republicans in Washington aim to launch an aggressive agenda around immigration policy.

Rep. Mayra Flores (R-TX) cried foul Wednesday after getting rejected from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the most influential Latino group of lawmakers on Capitol Hill, whose bylaws explicitly block Republicans from joining due to major policy differences between members in the past.

Latinos make up a small percentage of Congress, a little over eight percent. Of the 45 Latinos currently serving in Congress, 18 (40 percent) represent states where abortion is banned, restricted, or expected to have restrictions soon

The proposed congressional map also increases the number of districts where Trump would have had a majority of voters over Biden in 2020 and protects Republican incumbents who might have been vulnerable by packing their districts with more Trump voters.

While final data is still being gathered, experts say election results are expected to show that Latino voters turned out in record numbers nationwide.

“Like the population overall, Latinos are turning out to vote early in record numbers,” said NALEO Educational Fund CEO Arturo Vargas.

The analysis noted that Latino candidates are running for top offices in 36 states, including in parts of the country that are experiencing emerging Latino communities.
