Hurricane María, a Category 4 storm that swept through Puerto Rico in September 2017, left the island with a “new coast,” according to a new study by the Institute of Investigation and Coastal Planification of Puerto Rico.

On the island of Puerto Rico, there are more than 40,000 people using electrical devices that extend their lives, and during emergencies they are more vulnerable.

The need for answers is just as pressing as ever.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — U.S. researchers who estimated that nearly 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane María are now investigating deaths that might have been missed and could be linked to infrastructure damaged by the Category 4 storm, officials announced Wednesday.

Research team explained to officials that it would not have been necessary to estimate deaths based on surveys if Demographic Registry data had been available.

“You are in an English-speaking country,” the assistant manager says. “We need the check in English.”

The World Bank says that there is practically no difference in services both sectors offer.

Four hundred and eighty seven stories of extreme and inhuman suffering, each one with its own name, prove that many of the deaths caused by Hurricane María could have been avoided, while revealing the causes that led to this historic rise in mortality in Puerto Rico.

PRFAA, the official Washington office for the governor of Puerto Rico, has declined to comment about whether or not the meeting took place.

“What we had is basically everyone being overwhelmed in that circumstance. The territorial government was overwhelmed. FEMA was overwhelmed,” said Chris Currie, the GAO’s director for its Homeland Security and Justice team.
